The Center for Genetics and Pharmacology will house two world-renowned scientific teams, representing the best and brightest in cancer genetics research and new cancer drug development. This new building will expand the campus of the worlds first comprehensive cancer center as well as anchor one part of the Buffalo Life Sciences Complex (BLSC). The BLSC also includes the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences and the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute.
Roswell Park Cancer Institute focuses on cancer research as the core element of its mission. Groundbreaking research by RPCI scientists has led to greater understanding of the nature of cancer and to major advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment that are now in use worldwide. RPCI instituted the nation's first chemotherapy program, pioneered studies on the relationship between smoking and lung cancer and developed photodynamic therapy (PDT) and the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test. The Institute also made significant contributions to the landmark human genome project. RPCI's Center for Pharmacology and Therapeutics is one of the few centers in the nation capable of all phases of drug development, from the conceptual stage through manufacturing and testing.
This year RPCI's strong basic and clinical research programs attracted major research grants and contracts totaling more than $81 million. The Institute has sponsored or collaborated on more than 350 clinical trials of promising new cancer treatments.
Over 8,400 individuals contributed to RPCI's $21 million fundraising campaign, Horizons of Hope, which when combined with $41 million in New York State funding allowed the Phase I construction of the RPCI Center for Genetics and Pharmacology to be completed. Phase II of the construction, which will complete the fourth and fifth floors, is underway and will cost an estimated $20 million of which New York State is contributing $18 million and the federal government is contributing $750,000. Donors will provide the remaining $1.25 million.
The Foundation pledged $500,000 in 2005 payable over 5 years to The Roswell Park Cancer Institute “Horizons of Hope Campaign” to ensure Roswell Park’s continued status as one of the nation’s top comprehensive cancer centers. The new Center for Genetics and Pharmacology will expand the boundaries of knowledge with the use of technology in the molecular, cellular and genetic bases of disease.
