Canisius College will dedicate its new, multi-use Patrick P. Lee Student Athletic Center at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The $1.1 million facility, adjacent to the college's Koessler Athletic Center at Main Street and East Delavan Avenue, is for intramural and recreational use by Canisius students. College President Vincent M. Cooke praised the new building, named for Patrick P. Lee, chairman and chief executive officer of International Motion Control Inc. of Orchard Park.
Lee contributed $500,000 to the Imagine Canisius capital campaign for the construction project.
"With more than 26 varsity and club teams using the Koessler Athletic Center, and with the dramatic growth of the physical education and athletic-training programs at Canisius, the Lee Student Center will meet the need for intramural and recreational space for the general student body," Father Cooke said.
"The student athletic center at Canisius represents a place where future generations can fulfill the Jesuit philosophy of educating the full person," noted Lee, a Canisius College regent from 1980 to 1986.
"It is my hope that this contribution will serve as a reminder of my appreciation for all that the Jesuits have meant to me," Lee said.
At 21,000 square feet, the new facility doubles the gym area of the Koessler center and is convertible to three tennis courts; two full and two half basketball courts, or three volley ball areas. It can also be used for seating for 600 at assemblies and other student functions.
