Patrick P. Lee, chairman and chief executive officer of International Motion Control Inc. of Orchard Park, is giving $500,000 toward Canisius College's $1.1 million Student Recreation Center, college officials announced Thursday.
The funds are considered a major donation to the college's ambitious $30 million capital campaign. "This major gift will allow all Canisius College students the opportunity to utilize a first-class athletic center for intramural and other recreational activities," said College President Rev. Vincent M. Cooke.
The new Student Recreation Center, which will be named for Lee, will be a 21,000-square-foot facility that will double the gym area of the college's Koessler Athletic Center at Main Street and East Delavan Avenue. The new building will face Florida Street.
Special flooring will make the space convertible -- for use as three tennis courts, two full and two half basketball courts or three volleyball areas.
"When the Koessler Athletic Center was built in 1969, there were only 14 NCAA teams vying for space," Father Cooke noted.
"Today, a total of 26 varsity and club teams compete for the use of the (Koessler Center), which leaves little time available for other students."
Ground is expected to be broken for the new facility by February. Completion is targeted for September.
Lee, a Canisius regent from 1980 to 1986, said:
"The community needs to be aware of the valuable contribution that Canisius and this capital campaign are making to the Western New York area -- and recognize the importance of Canisius as a vital downtown enterprise at the forefront of the restructuring of Buffalo."
The college's Imagine Canisius campaign, which got under way in September, has raised almost $16 million toward its goal of $30 million by the year 2000.
