Project Lifesaver WNY Receives $5,000 Grant from the Patrick P. Lee Foundation

Amherst, NY – David S. Aston, President of Project Lifesaver WNY, has announced the receipt of a $5,000 grant from the Patrick P. Lee Foundation in support of the expansion of this new program that partners with the Erie County Sheriff’s Department to provide support to individuals with disabilities who are at risk of wandering.

Project Lifesaver WNY is a newly formed not-for-profit agency serving Western New York that utilizes radio technology in combination with specially-trained search and rescue personnel to locate individuals that may wander from their home or caregiver. Led by a volunteer Board of Directors, Project Lifesaver WNY is a local organization that supports WNY children and adults with disabilities including autism, mental retardation, Down Syndrome, as well as those with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Since the program was launched in July 2009, Project Lifesaver WNY has enrolled 15 children and adults into the program. Officers meet with program participants monthly to conduct battery changes and ensure that the equipment is functioning properly. In November 2009, Project Lifesaver WNY was credited for assisting the Erie County Sheriff’s Department in locating a program participant that was reported missing in a rural WNY community.

“We greatly appreciate the financial support of the Patrick P. Lee Foundation for this very important technology that will help keep our most vulnerable citizens safe. If we can save just one lost child, or return one wandering person to their family, it will be a huge community success,” Aston said.
